The number of the NBI personnel is approximately 700. Roughly 500 of them work at the NBI Headquarters in Vantaa and 200 in the regional divisions.

A much higher number of the employees work as specialists than in the police administration in general. They are engaged in forensic investigation, international co-operation, IT-matters and administration. Correspondingly, the number of NBI staff working in police duties is smaller than in the police administration in general.

Approximately 40 % of the NBI employees are women. The reason for this is the high amount of specialists.

Also the educational structure of the NBI staff differs significantly of the police force in general. This is due to the great number of specialists and the organisational structure of the police staff in which the proportion of senior and commanding officers is higher than in most other police units. 33 % of the employees have undertaken polytechnic or university education and 4 % of them have a postgraduate degree.
