Requirements for acquisition permit applicants

An acquisition permit for a firearm may be granted only to persons who are at least 18 years of age and who, on the basis of their state of health and behaviour, are considered fit to possess a firearm or firearm component. A criminal record or drugs or alcohol abuse, for example, may be obstacles to the granting of the permit.

An acquisition permit for a pistol, smallbore pistol, revolver or smallbore revolver or their component may only be granted to persons at least 20 years of age.

The possession of an illegal firearm, firearm component, cartridges or specially dangerous projectiles is not an obstacle to the granting of an acquisition permit for these objects if the applicant informs the police of the objects at his or her own initiative or surrenders the objects to the police.  However, other offences committed by the applicant may constitute an obstacle to the granting of the permit.
