Firearms belonging to a deceased’s estate

Under the Firearms Act, a person in possession of a deceased’s estate must take possession of any firearms, firearm components, cartridges and specially dangerous projectiles belonging to the estate immediately after the permit holder’s death.

Within six months of the death of the permit holder, a possession permit must be acquired for the above or they must otherwise be conveyed either to a person entitled to their possession or to the police.

Alternatively, the firearms may be permanently rendered unfit for use or the firearm components permanently deactivated, and subsequently presented to the police.
