Rendering a firearm or firearm component permanently deactivatedIt is possible to render a firearm permanently unfit for use or permanently deactivate firearm components. After this, a permit is no longer required for the possession of the firearm or firearm components. A deactivated firearm will still have the appearance of a functional firearm. The Firearms Act was amended on 13 June 2011, after which the National Police Board will no longer provide instructions for the deactivation of firearms, but the instructions will be provided by a decree issued by the Ministry of the Interior. The current instructions for the deactivation of firearms will be valid until the Ministry of the Interior issues decree on the topic (section 119 of the Firearms Act). The deactivation of a firearm or a firearm component may only be carried out by licensed traders who have obtained a permit for the commercial manufacturing or repair and modification of firearms (section 112 b of the Firearms Act). A firearm or a firearm component is considered deactivated if it has been rendered permanently unfit for use and cannot be restored into functional condition without specialised knowledge and skills.
