Guard and temporary guard certification



Guard and temporary guard certification can be granted to persons who have reached the age of 18 years but not yet 68 years and who are known to be honest and dependable and have personal characteristics that make them suitable for the job of guard. Furthermore, to be granted with guard certification persons are required to have satisfactorily completed guard training which meets the requirements laid down by the Ministry of the Interior.

Guard and temporary guard certification is granted by the local police department of the applicant’s municipality of residence. Applications for guard certification must be submitted in person. Applications can also be submitted to a local police department other than the one in the applicant’s municipality of residence.

When applying for guard or temporary guard certification, the applicant must provide

  • a certificate of completed guard or temporary guard training
  • if necessary, a certificate of completed special forcible means training and a certificate of a passed obedience test for dogs accompanying guards when carrying out certain guarding assignments
  • two passport photographs.

Guard or temporary guard certification remains in force for five years. Its validity ceases, however, once the person reaches the age of 68 years. Persons certified as temporary guards may act as guards for a maximum period of four months during one calendar year. If there is special reason, conditions and other restrictions may be incorporated into the guard and temporary guard certification.

Guarding services suppliers and other providers of basic guard training are entitled to receive from the police an opinion on the suitability of the persons as guards when they enrol for training.
