Use of safety equipmentOne of the aims of police traffic surveillance is to increase the use of seat belts and other safety equipment. This means that as many people as possible failing to use such equipment are given a fixed fine or written admonition. Children under 135cm in height must use type approved child safety equipment if the vehicle has seat belts or if child safety equipment can be fitted to the vehicle in some other way. If it is not possible to fit child safety equipment to the vehicle, children who are three years old or over must not travel in the front passenger seat. When travelling by bus or coach, children who have their own seats must wear the seat belt or child safety equipment fitted to the seat. Rear-facing child seats must not be used in a seat protected by a frontal airbag unless the airbag has been deactivated or the vehicle has an effective automatic airbag deactivation system.
